Pooch's Paradise

Pooch's Paradise

The sun is shining brightly, on a lovely summer's day

Everything is ready, we'll soon be on our way

I'm sitting in my basket, head up tall and proud

Because the place we're going to, has a sign saying 'Dogs Allowed'

I've raced through ferns at Healesville, paddled in surf at Lorne

But my idea of heaven, is a carriage that's horse drawn

They've hitched and fed the horses, stored the food and bedding

So it's off with a wave and a map from Dave, to work out where we're heading

I can run along the lane ways, as the fields are fenced with wire

Or hop aboard the wagon, if my little legs get tired

Then as the shadows lengthen, my heart begins to quiver

When we pull into a campsite, beside the Loddon river

I can smell those lamb chops cooking, then as day turns into night

The boss arrives with my sweetheart Minnie, to make sure we're alright

Rod checks around the camp site and once it's hunky-dory

He sits down by the fire and tells a bush man's story

Those Clydesdale's might get pampered, old Ferdy and young Josh

But no one could be more content, than this Maltese/Shitzhu cross

Attenptedhumour. Hi. Wow I loved this poem.

I can just picture these two little guys playing and romping together.

Maltese Shitzu's are the most beautiful dog's ever.

Healesville has a special place in my heart.

Thank you for sharing this poem with us. :) :)

attenptedhumour. Hi. Yes many times when I was very young.

It is a very pretty country town. We had family living there way back then. :) :)

It really is a hidden valley as a lot of Melbourneites have never been there. We've just bought a one bedroom weather board shack in east warby on a third of an acre, which needs a bit of work, but will be lovely to use on weekend. Our best friends have a house on 60 acres in wesburn and are planning to build a nice house there. We've been to Healesville millions of times our favourite place is the Badger wier. Have you been there?

attemptedhumour. Hi. Yes you are right, they don't know what they are missing.

Your little shack sounds wonderful, somewhere to go and relax.

Yes I have been to Badger Weir too many times to count.

My siblings and I used to walk out to the Healesville Sanctuary every Sunday along Badger Creek Road, which is not too far from the Weir.

Goodness me what memories this is bringing back. :) :)

A dog's life can (and should) be wonderful when shared with the right humans, especially when they're in a place that says, "Dogs Allowed."

By the way, does a Maltese/Shizhu mix have a blended breed name? I ask that because my granddaughter just got a Maltese/Poodle mix called a "Malti-Poo." It's a delightful little dog.

Lovely poem, Keith. Lovely images of that thoroughly happy little dog. JAYE

Hi Jaye no melded name i'm aware of. I watched a British who done it last night and there were twenty suspects, all looking like the murderer. It was reasonable. Try and find time to see The King's Speech it is brilliant.

I loved this poem. Hunky-dory now there's something I have not heard in quite some time.

Hi Susan, it rhymed nicely with story. I wasn't sure if it was a common saying outside of the UK and Australia. This poem was written for a competition where you had to describe your best dog-friendly accommodation in 200 words or less. This was written when pooch was a young active dog. He died last Jan aged 15 from a brown snake bite. He had a great life though, with five other dogs to keep him company. He never spent one day in a pound, as we always take our dogs on holiday with us, or have house sitters when overseas. Thanks for calling.

Hi jami, thanks for digging this old hub up from the graveyard. Pooch passed away last jan' aged 15 from a snake bite, but he had a great adventurous life that he shared with our family and other dogs. We still have five other small dogs and love them all equally. Thanks for calling.
